GrapheneOS Ships Android 17

Released 17 June 2026. Here's what's new and what SOVEREIGN customers need to do.

17 June 2026 (updated 8 July 2026)

GrapheneOS released its Android 17 build on 17 June 2026. For SOVEREIGN customers, this is a significant update — the first major Android version release since Android 16 shipped in 2025.

What Android 17 brings

Android 17 is Google's major 2026 platform release. As with every annual Android release, it brings a new security patch baseline, refreshed system APIs, and incremental improvements across the operating system rather than a single headline feature. What matters most for a hardened device like a SOVEREIGN phone is what the release represents: active maintenance, a fresh round of security patching across the base OS, and a new foundation of system APIs that GrapheneOS builds its own protections on top of.

We'd rather be precise than speculative about specific feature changes this early in the release cycle — for the authoritative list of what changed, Google's own Android 17 release notes are the source of record. What we can confirm directly is what GrapheneOS does with that base, covered below.

What GrapheneOS adds on top

GrapheneOS doesn't just ship Android 17 as-is — it applies its full security hardening to the new base. All GrapheneOS-specific protections carry forward to Android 17: hardened_malloc, exploit protection, Sandboxed Google Play, and per-app permission controls all continue to work exactly as they did on Android 16, on top of the new OS version.

GrapheneOS typically ships major Android versions quickly after AOSP is released — this release is no exception. That speed is a direct signal of the project's active maintenance, and one of the reasons we configure it on every SOVEREIGN device.

How to update your SOVEREIGN phone

  1. 01

    Check for the update

Your SOVEREIGN phone checks for updates automatically. Go to Settings > System > System update to check manually.

  2. 02

    Install when prompted

The update will appear when available. Download and install it when prompted.

  3. 03

    Let Verified Boot confirm it

The update is verified automatically via Verified Boot. After installation, your boot fingerprint will update to reflect the new Android 17 build.

  4. 04

    Check the new fingerprint

Check grapheneos.org/releases for the updated fingerprint for your device. Our /verify page will also be updated.

  5. 05

Why we recommend keeping your phone updated

GrapheneOS updates carry security patches that fix vulnerabilities in the Android base. An unpatched phone — even one running GrapheneOS — is less secure than a patched one. This is one of the reasons we recommend Android for certain threat models: GrapheneOS users typically receive security patches extremely quickly after Google releases them, often faster than OEM Android devices ship the same fix.

Fingerprint update

The verified boot fingerprint for your device changes with a new major Android version. New Android 17 fingerprints for all supported Pixel models are published at grapheneos.org/install/fingerprints. Our /verify page will be updated to reflect the new fingerprints. If your fingerprint shows the new Android 17 value, your phone has updated successfully.
